The Aesthetics of Recycling

 I purchased two more baskets made of recycled paper this week. At home I realized they go togerher with the striped rug very well. The rug I got from my mom last weekend. It's made by my grandmother and all the rags in it are totally recycled. My mom and her sisters used to lie on these rugs, go through the stripes and recall: "This was the dress I used to wear few years ago... Those were our bedroom curtains" and so on.

I started to ponder do I like these objects strictly because of their look, or is the thought of recycling and them being more ethical a part of their aesthetics? The rug obviously is dear to me because it's an iconic thing reminding me of my granny, my grandparents' house and my family. 

I'm not a huge fan of things that are "made to look ethical", if you know what I mean. But I really like these baskets and rugs - maybe because they're honest in what they are. What do you think?

 Hankin alkuviikosta pari uutta kierrätyspaperista tehtyä koria. Vaikka minulla oli pari samantyylistä koria jo ennestään, tajusin vasta nyt miten hyvin ne sopivat räsymaton kaveriksi. Maton sain viime viikonloppuna äidiltäni. Se on mummoni tekemä ja loimilankoja lukuun ottamatta täysin kierrätetty - äitini ja hänen siskonsa pystyvät bongaamaan maton raidoista kesämekkojaan, verhojaan ja muita tuttuja tekstiilejä. Mummo oli sen verran innokas saksimaan ja kutomaan, että vaatekaappiin ei ole päätynyt yhtäkään retroaarretta mummolan vintiltä :). Mutta onneksi on nämä matot!

Aloinkin pohdiskella, pidänkö näistä esineistä nimenomaan niiden ulkonäön vuoksi, vai onko tieto kierrätetystä materiaalista ja jonkinasteisesta eettisyydestä osa estetiikkaa? Matto on tietysti rakas myös kaikkien siihen liittyvien muistojen vuoksi. En ole "eettisen näköisiksi tehtyjen" esineiden suurin ystävä, mutta näistä pidän. Ehkä siksi, että ne ovat rehellisesti sitä, mitä ovat. Mitäs mieltä te olette?
